Wiper switch/wiper motor with Thanks to David L.

Good Saturday Morning Gentle Souls,

Well, I pleased to report that the Windscreen wipers do what they are supposed to do thanks to the help of my friends.

The switch and wiring on my OEM 73
CJ had a replacement wiper switch and the wipers would run only on one speed and wouldn't park. The wiper motor and wiring looked very much like my later car (S3) but the switch wiring bore no resemblance to the way mine was wired so I thought easy peazy just wire it up like mine-no joy!  Turned out the switch was an aftermarket switch that while externally looked similar the internals were different.  The aftermarket switch is designed for something else and I wasn't sure it would work but after taking it apart to see what it did and a communication with one of my friends I was able to sort this little critter (I wanted to say something else , but because this is a family site...) out.
The way CJ's was set up:
CJ's non functional Switch, notice leads on right and left set of poles, hard to tell but the switch has 8 poles lined up in two rows of 4
Pole 1----------RG
Pole 7 ---------UG
Pole 6------------G
Pole 8---------YG
Well this made no sense at all as there was no continuity from the right hand side of the switch to the left hand side no matter the position of the switch. Once I had the schematic from David I was able to figure out which wires should have continuity in the Off, Center, On positions of the switch then use my Ohm meter to see if there was a corresponding switch position that would  work.
For future reference:
Off= UG---RG   Parked
Ctr= G-----UG   Slow   
ON = G----YG  Fast     
Where UG is Blue/Green, RG is Red/Green, G is Green, YG is Yellow Green.


What finally worked with this switch, since the switches vary internally not sure the number will help others but here's what worked with this switch:

Pole 2 YG
Pole 4    G
Pole 6 UG
Pole 8 RG

One last little thing though, the wiper motor on my car had a ground from the case to the firewall, Cj didn't and this was the last little bit of the puzzle, with the ground attached on CJ's wiper motor it worked.....

As regular readers will know I was patting myself on the back for having sorted out the electrics on the wipers a few weeks ago.  Yesterday while doing a final inspection the dang wipers would not park.  In desperation I got out my manual for the Series 3 only to find this terse comment.   So since taking the wiper motor entails taking half the car apart I decided that CJ could have manually parked wipers and pulled the Green/red lead off the wiper switch.  CJ now has OFF, SLOW and SLOWER positions on the switch.  Someday If I have the time perhaps we can pull it out and see if it's something that can be repaired. Next, I got to thinking that I couldn't send CJ home with a vibration at 60 mph!  So up in the air she went and all the tires needed a little help one as much as 2 oz.   Hopefully that will take care of the vibration! Front Suspension, hubs and so forth

It was nice to have a day that wasn't interrupted by a trip into town,  the front suspension is installed and ready to rock and roll. Well, roll at least. I spent a fair amount of time this afternoon trying to get the splash pans installed having to make a bracket along the way.  The pictures start with the fitment of the calipers to the uprights.  I've used lock washer, Loctite, and safety wire. Probably overkill but when your talking about stopping.... I touched up the rivets that I used to plug the holes in the frame rails with primer and then mixed up a little paint that is pretty close to the correct color. I used 50 lb safety wire, it should be set up so that loosening of one bolt will tighten the other, I think it was used extensively in the aircraft industry.  Just showing the now complete front suspension, no splash pans though Same thing on the passenger side, the bearings were set to 1-2/1000" free-play. Door Strap, Bonnet safety latch, Bonnet weatherstripping

Afternoon folks,  got  few little chores taken care of but it's always amazing how much time it takes on even what appears to be the simplest project.  I took a detour to install the safety latch on the bonnet only to find out that the backing plate was missing so I had to make one. After removing the grill I found that the backing plate was missing Making a new plate Drilling the plate New backing plate to mount the safety latch to New safety latch mounted Back to the door strap, I installed the door strap yesterday but it became apparent that there were a few other issues to take care of, one of the door mounting bolts had not been installed and it was obvious that incorrect bolts were used to attach the door.  These are a special bolt with a tapered head that fits into a tapered recess in the door.  I would replace the bolts if I had replacements but at least I can install the missing bolt.
