Door Strap, Bonnet safety latch, Bonnet weatherstripping

Afternoon folks,  got  few little chores taken care of but it's always amazing how much time it takes on even what appears to be the simplest project.  I took a detour to install the safety latch on the bonnet only to find out that the backing plate was missing so I had to make one.

Back to the door strap, I installed the door strap yesterday but it became apparent that there were a few other issues to take care of, one of the door mounting bolts had not been installed and it was obvious that incorrect bolts were used to attach the door.  These are a special bolt with a tapered head that fits into a tapered recess in the door.  I would replace the bolts if I had replacements but at least I can install the missing bolt.

The door card didn't fit right and the upholstery material was coming loose from the trim so it was removed, glued and refitted.

Incorrect fasteners were used on the door handle, and the arm rest.  I was able to find fasteners that were the correct size and close in appearance to what should have been there.  One has the impression that whom ever reassembled the car just used what ever was laying around having probably lost the correct fasteners?

New data plate installed, sadly, on the last number on the gear box was a 3, well it is backwards so I'll order a new plate on Tuesday for CJ, maybe 2 of them. This one is just mounted with screws temporarily, what a PITA.
The next task on the agenda is to get his direct reading water temperature gauge installed.  This will require the removal of the center console and under dash hardura.  I'm concerned about having a long enough capillary tube to run from the fitting on the intake manifold to the gauge and finding an opening in the firewall that will allow passage of the fittings to get from the gauge cluster through the firewall and to the front of the intake manifold. So tomorrow or later this week I'll be digging into this to see how to make it work.

  1. Good work on that safety catch backing plate. I've seen cars without a catch at all and a sudden stop can result in a badly mangled bonnet.

  2. My Series 2 also had the safety catch missing (and the backing plate) when I acquired it. As I recall it was the first job I did on the car. I guess that folks remove it to paint the bonnet and never get around to replacing it. Nice work!
